AltaGas owns and operates the ALA Energy Ferndale Export Terminal in the Cherry Point industrial area, where they deliver propane and butane across North America and Asia. They also operate a marine terminal here in Whatcom County and are one of our Captain-level sponsors for our annual Tide to Table celebration.
AltaGas acquired full ownership and operations of the former Petrogas export facility at the end of 2020 and we’ve been integrating the facility into the AltaGas family of Midstream assets since 2021. Last year, the facility was rebranded as the ALA Energy Ferndale Export Terminal.
The group transports liquified petroleum gas (LPG), in the form of propane and butane, from North America to our customers in Asia. Between their Ferndale Export Terminal and our Ridley Island Export Terminal in British Columbia, they now supply more than 24 percent of Japan’s and 12 percent of South Korea’s LPG, helping to connect Whatcom county's maritime sector to the world.
AltaGas is proud to support the Working Waterfront Coalition because they share the Coalition’s vision of a waterfront that works for everyone – by respecting the economic contributions, diversity, and heritage, and promoting a healthy shoreline through appropriate infrastructure and sustainable practices.
As a diversified energy company, AltaGas employs 2,800 people across our network of midstream and utilities assets in Canada and the United States. In Ferndale, they have more than 40 operators, maintenance engineers, and other team members working 24/7 to keep their facilities running safely and efficiently.
AltaGas celebrated successes last year that include ALA Energy becoming a leading sponsor of Quiet Sound, a collaborative program to reduce impacts to Southern Resident killer whales from large commercial vessels. They also celebrated the continued growth of our involvement in the community, by deepening their participation in several local civic organizations, expanding their employee volunteer efforts, and increasing financial donations to local non-profits serving the needs of their neighbors and Whatcom County communities.
Company-wide, the value of their unique integrated business model, coupled with their commitment to safely and reliably delivering North American energy to customers in the United States, Canada, and Asia, is demonstrated in their most recent 2024 achievements, where they recorded an increase in earnings and our share price performance (which is traded on Toronto Stock Exchange, under the symbol ALA).
This year, they're looking forward to enrolling the Ferndale Export Terminal in the Green Marine environmental certification program, which is a comprehensive framework for maritime companies to benchmark and then reduce their environmental footprint through a rigorous and transparent process of continuous improvement on prioritized environmental issues related to biodiversity protection, air, water and soil quality, and community relations.
They are also hopeful to receive additional favorable clarity regarding the future of the federal funding for the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub grant program, so that they can continue to progress the planning and design work for our proposed electrolytic hydrogen production facility at the Intalco brownfield site.
The Working Waterfront Coalition would like to thank AltaGas/ALA Energy for their support and the work they do!
