The Whatcom Working Waterfront Coalition has officially moved offices, growing into a new space with more possibilities for community engagement. The new address is:

The Whatcom Working Waterfront Coalition
708 Coho Way,
Bellingham WA 98225

The new office space is shared by all three Working Waterfront organizations, the Coalition, the Foundation and our Services, LLC which oversees the Whatcom Working Waterfront Health Trust. The offices feature space for classroom instruction, meetings, cubicles for office work, and a workshop for hands-on learning with the various apprenticeship program courses that are taught at the location.

The Coalition looks forward to growing in the new space alongside the Whatcom Working Waterfront Foundation and the NW Maritime Apprenticeship. If you're in Squalicum Harbor, the space is just down the storefronts from the Harbormaster Office, right across the parking lot from Nikki's Bella Marina.  Drop in and say hello!

December 2, Bellingham Yacht Club’s annual Lighted Boat Parade helped kick off the holiday season with a spectacular showing of boats of all sizes lit up with holiday decorations. The Coast Guard joined in, decked out in Santa suit.  Also, Alaska Girl , a commercial fishing boat,  stole the show with her fireworks and extensive boat lights.

“The Lighted Boat Parade is just one of our winter social events,” explained Commodore Jim Haines. “We’d like to thank everyone who participated, especially the Coast Guard, local commercial fleet member, the F/V Alaskan Girl ”, and the local merchants who sponsored prizes for award-winning displays.” He added, “As both a social and boating club, we are always pleased to welcome our members, potential members, and invited guests to the Club.”

The Club is also kicking off their winter membership drive. Anyone joining now through January 31 has the initiation fee waved. “Bellingham Yacht Club membership would be a great gift for the holidays. We offer organized events and casual hang out space year-round as well as youth programs and boating events in our busy summer season,” said Pete Dworkin, Membership Chair. “We do not require boat ownership or a sponsor, so anyone interested is encouraged to apply,” he added.

More information about membership, membership benefits and how to join are at  https://byc.org/membership.

The Maritime Washington National Heritage Area (WMNHA) has launched its first grant program since inauguration, offering a boost to the organizations and groups that tell the stories of our waterfront heritage, history, places, and peoples.

There are two opportunities, in both a regular dispersement and a matching grant for planning and implementation of projects.

If you don't apply this year, they plan to offer more in successive notices of funding, so stay tuned to the MWNHA page for more opportunities to help promote the local waterfronts and our place upon them.

Read more about the active funding opportunities (applications due Dec. 15) below:

WA Sea Grant Seeks Citizen Science on King Tides

(King Tides. Photo courtesy WA Sea Grant.)

Washington Sea Grant seeks photographs from citizens to help document the effects of King Tides in different areas of our waterfront, and to help understand and plan for the effects of higher sea levels and other flooding events.

King Tides are extraordinarily high tides, caused by the motions of the sun and moon. To learn more about Sea Grant's call for citizen science, and to be a part of the scientific process in action, visit the link below:
